Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for hours when dozens of them drifted across the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights impacting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why criminals use a method that is highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that this activity become unprofitable and present no risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
